Question: What Happens If A Trucker Does Not Pay The 2290 Tax?

Answer: The state DMV, DOT, etc. would eventually catch them because they would not be able to get their license plates renewed. If you are operating a vehicle with expired license plates and you get pulled over, the penalties for that can vary depending on who pulls you over and how upset that person is. You will almost certainly have your truck impounded and that could mean you would lose your load. Imagine if you are transporting a load of fresh strawberries when you get impounded—it would probably go bad and you would be in big trouble. Without paying the 2290 Tax, a driver cannot legally work so they would no longer get paid until the issue is settled.
